Flocking the bird

ça y est, j'ai enfin surmonté ma trouille à utiliser un appareil que je connaissais pas encore et j'ai commencé le flocage du masque d'hirondelle. Bon évidemment dans la lumière blafarde c'est pas évident de voir mais ça donne des reflets très bluffants qui font vraiment penser à du plumage. Je pense que sur scène ça va vraiment faire de l'effet.

I finally got over my fear of using a tool I had never used before and did most of the flocking on the swallow mask. And I really like it ! In fact I enjoyed the process and the result so much that I'm pretty sure I'll find ways to use that tool again very soon. Maybe I'll even start working on the polar bear mask I've been wanting to do the last 3 years or so ! 
Anyway, I can't wait to have the pictures of everything on stage, with the stage lights and all. I'm getting very fed up of my phonecamera horrors ! I need real pictures !

Suite du bloc-notes / staying sketchy

Bon, voici quelques photos en vrac, pas très travaillées puisque prise au téléphone portable entre deux couches de peinture. J'espère réussir à faire des photos décentes des marionnettes dans les jours qui viennent. Reprise des répétitions dans 7 jours.

I'm still having trouble taking pictures while i'm working on finishing the puppets, mask and so on before the rehearsals start again in 7 days. So those are cellphone photos, which still are better than nothing at all... Hope i'll find time to take a decent picture of the puppets soon.

C'est vraiment du bloc notes, pas assez de temps pour développer ! / OK, this is going to be sketchy at best, as I really don't have much time to comment on the whole thing.

Les marionnettes avancent (des photos bientôt), avec des mains, et bientôt des couleurs et des poils/cheveux. / The puppets are slowly getting ready, with hands and real soon colors and hair(s). Some picture when the transformations are worth it.

Le masque d'hirondelle prend doucement forme lui aussi. J'ai hâte d'essayer pour la première fois le flocage... / The swallow mask (woaw, I just learned a new word... swallow... strange) is taking shape as well. I'm really looking forward to trying flocking for the first time. It's supposed to look really well.

Le mannequin échelle humaine de Charles commence à s'assembler, mais c'est encore le début du début. Charles a été quelque peu récalcitrant, comme on peut le voir sur l'une des photos. La tête était prête à être moulée quand elle a décidé de se jeter de mon plan de travail, avec les conséquences que j'ai immédiatement documentées pour la postérité (enfin, pour ne pas hurler, surtout...) La photo qui suit est la reconstruction faciale de Charles. C'est encore moi la chef. / Human size Charles is coming along bits by bits, but I'm still at the beginning of the process. He has been a little annoying I must say, as you can see on one of the pictures. The head was all ready to be moulded when it suddenly decided to jump of my workbench. The consequences of this you can see on the photo I immediately took for my own personal documentation of how nightmarish the job sometimes is. It was either that or a nervous breakdown. And it sure helped me with the speedy face reconstruction (see following picture). I felt like Rico in 6 feet under. Well not quite of course, as the guy was never alive to begin with.

Les visuels en papier découpé... avant passage par l'ordinateur / The cutouts before any Photoshop

Parce que ça me chiffonne de ne donner à voir que les images nettoyées sur ordinateur, voici à les découpages originaux, sans retouches et photographiés vite fait avec mon téléphone portable, avant contrecollage sur du bristol. Les petits détails ont donc tendance à ne pas rester tout à fait à plat et à faire des ombres, ce que j'aime bien. On retrouve l'aspect fait main.

Because it's bugging me to show only the computerized/"clean" pictures, here are the original cutouts, without any editing and quickly shot with my cell phone, before they were even glued to a white card. The details tends to lift a little from the card underneath and make shadows, which I kind of like, because you see the handmade touch again.

Les visuels en papier découpé pour les affiches de 2h14 / Papercuts for 2h14's posters

Pour les affiches de 2h14, j'ai choisi de réaliser des visuels en papier découpé (car j'aime décidément beaucoup ça), en utilisant un code graphique assez fort pour que l'on reconnaisse que chacune appartient à la même série.

Il y aura donc 6 affiches différentes, une par personnage principal, basées sur le visages des interprètes, et elles seront tirées en sérigraphie au labo de la Fanzinothèque de Poitiers. Les images que vous voyez ici ont été nettoyées sur ordinateur, on perd donc un peu l'aspect papier découpé, mais le côté artisanal se retrouvera sur les affiches grâce à la sérigraphie.

Chaque affiche est comme une sorte de petit instantané du personnage et j'ai essayé de créer des images à la fois fortes graphiquement et un peu étranges, qui donnent envie de connaître plus les personnages et leur histoire respective.
Les phrases sont issues de la pièce qui, je le rappelle, a été écrite par David Paquet, un jeune et talentueux auteur dramatique québécois dont on n'a pas fini d'entendre parler.

For the posters of my next show, I decided to create different designs in paper (because I really do like cutouts, and I haven't been doing any since The Walking Shadow), using a strong visual identity that makes it clear that all images belong to the same serie.

There will be 6 different designs, one for each main character of the play. They are based on the faces of the actors/actresses and the posters will be silk-screen printed. What you see here are the pictures after they have been shot and "cleaned" with Photoshop, so that you loose a bit the papercraft look. But the handmade touch will be brought back by the silk-screen process.

Each one is like a snapshot of the character and I tried to make pictures that are both effective and a bit weird, so that seing it you just want to know more about each character and his/her story. 

The sentences used in the papercuts come from the play 2h14, by David Paquet, a young and talented playwright from Montreal which you might have heard of already. And if not, watch out 'cause it's gonna hit you soon. Big time !
